Escape, Evasion Class

$75

/3 hours

The Escape and Evasion class provides insight into the principles of avoidance, escape, and evasion. It reviews the sympathetic nervous system’s impact on survival; reviews techniques for avoiding pending aggression by becoming aware of certain threat cues; reviews techniques for countering and escaping from escalating levels of physical threats and refines the student’s physical technique.

Course Goals

  1. To examine survival learning research in an effort to enhance survivability in a combat situation.

  2. To instruct an escape and evasion system that is compatible with the effects of survival stress.

  3. To teach students how to avoid being attacked and how to effectively evade or escape their assailant if they are attacked.

Course Topics

Use of Force Human Factors

This chapter examines survival stress research and provides student with information that will enhance their survivability in a combative situation and recommendations regarding issues related to critical incident management.

Principles of Avoidance

This chapter shows students how to predict and avoid pending aggression by becoming aware of certain threat cues and focuses on the three basic “Principles of Avoidance”: know your limitations, control the environment, and control your fear. Students learn how to use awareness and distance to control survival stress/fear and how to read potentially aggressive body language.

Passive Releases and Escapes

This chapter analyzes the three most common categories of passive assaults (passive intimidation, flirtatious contact, and wrist grabs) and provides three techniques designed to manage/control those threats.

Defensive Counterstrikes

This chapter introduces a simple system of defensive counterstrikes, composed of two blocks, two stunning techniques and two kicks, all designed to temporarily stun or disable an aggressor for 30 seconds or more and allow the student to escape attack.

Disarming

This chapter provides students with the skills and knowledge needed to disarm an attacker when they believe that their life is in imminent jeopardy and all other survival strategies have failed. It examines basic survival strategies (including maintaining a reactionary gap, identifying threatening body language, developing a predetermined survival response, and maintaining psychological control of the subject and the environment) and presents a basic disarming system based on three simple components (waiting for the subject to become distracted, closing distance to the subject, and twisting the weapon in a way that defeats the normal gripping action of the hand).
